Guidelines and Tips

What to Bring (Your Personal Items):

  • Swimwear: Already on under your clothes is often easiest.
  • Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Crucial! Apply generously before you even get on the boat.
  • Rash Guard/Swim Shirt: Excellent physical sun protection.
  • Hat & Sunglasses: For boat rides and when on the islands.
  • Towel: To dry off after your snorkeling sessions.
  • Water Bottle: Even if water is provided, having your own is good.
  • Waterproof Camera (GoPro, waterproof phone case): To capture memories. Ensure it’s secured!
  • Dry Bag: To protect your phone, wallet, keys, and other valuables from splashes.
  • Small Backpack/Day Bag: To carry your personal items.
  • Motion Sickness Medication: If you’re prone to seasickness, take it before getting on the boat.
  • Small Amount of Cash: For any personal purchases on islands (drinks, souvenirs) or for tipping.
  • Personal Snorkeling Gear (Optional): If you prefer your own mask, snorkel, or fins for comfort/fit.

What to Do:

  • Listen to Your Guide: Pay close attention to the pre-snorkeling briefing. This includes safety instructions, what to look for, designated areas, and “do not touch” reminders.
  • Confirm Gear Fit: Before entering the water, ensure your mask, snorkel, and fins provided by the tour agent fit you correctly. Ask for adjustments or replacements if needed.
  • Wear the Life Jacket: Even if you’re a strong swimmer, it’s often mandatory and always a good idea. It allows you to relax and conserve energy.
  • Follow the Group/Guide: Stay within the designated snorkeling area or close to your guide. This ensures your safety and helps them keep track of everyone.
  • Report Issues: If you feel unwell, have a problem with your gear, or see something concerning (e.g., someone touching coral), immediately inform your guide or a crew member.
  • Hydrate Regularly: Drink water offered by the tour, especially after each snorkeling session.
  • Reapply Sunscreen: Reapply reef-safe sunscreen, especially after being in the water for a while.
  • Enjoy the View: Focus on observing the incredible marine life and coral formations. Look for diversity in fish, coral types, and other creatures.
  • Be Polite and Considerate: To other snorkelers and the tour staff.

What Not to Do:

  • DO NOT Ignore Briefings: Don’t assume you know everything. Every tour and location can have unique conditions.
  • DO NOT Touch or Stand on Coral: This is the most crucial rule. Your tour guide will emphasize it, but it bears repeating. Accidental contact can severely damage fragile corals.
  • DO NOT Take Anything from the Ocean: Leave shells, coral, starfish, or any marine life where you find them.
  • DO NOT Feed Marine Life: Even if others are doing it, avoid feeding fish. It disrupts their natural behavior and can harm them.
  • DO NOT Harass or Chase Animals: Observe from a distance. Respect their space.
  • DO NOT Wander Off Alone: Especially in unfamiliar waters or areas with currents. Stick with the group or inform your guide if you need to go somewhere specific.
  • DO NOT Over-Exert Yourself: If you feel tired or uncomfortable, signal to your guide or return to the boat. Don’t push your limits.
  • DO NOT Litter: Keep all trash on the boat or dispose of it properly at designated bins.
  • DO NOT Consume Excessive Alcohol Before/During: This impairs judgment and can be dangerous in the water.
