Dinh Ba Ong Lang Phu Quoc – A Spiritual and Cultural Experience

When travelers think about Phu Quoc, they often imagine white beaches, seafood, and luxury resorts. But beyond the coastline, the island also carries deep cultural and spiritual traditions. One of the best places to explore this side of Phu Quoc is Dinh Ba Ong Lang, a sacred temple just a short ride away from Duong Dong town.

In this article, I’ll share my visit to the temple, what makes it important to local people, and why you should consider adding it to your Phu Quoc itinerary.

Dinh Ba Ong Lang Phu Quoc - Le Kim Dinh

About Dinh Ba Ong Lang Phu Quoc

Located in Ong Lang village, Cua Duong commune, around 7 km north of Duong Dong, the temple is dedicated to Bà Lê Kim Định – also known as Bà Kim Giao – the wife of national hero Nguyễn Trung Trực.

Legend says that after Nguyễn Trung Trực passed away, Bà Lê Kim Định moved to Phu Quoc. She taught local people farming and fishing skills, helped build the community, and was loved by everyone. When she passed away, the villagers built this temple to honor her spirit, believing she continues to protect them.

Today, Dinh Ba Ong Lang Phu Quoc is considered a sacred place for fishermen and families who pray for peace, health, safety at sea, and prosperity in business. Couples also visit to ask for love and harmony in their relationship.

The Festival of Dinh Ba Ong Lang

One of the most vibrant times to visit the temple is during the annual festival, held on the 18th and 19th of the first lunar month (usually February or March).

The celebration includes:

  • Water procession – a symbolic ritual of gratitude to nature.
  • Lion and dragon dances – adding festive colors and energy.
  • Incense offering – locals and visitors pray for peace and good fortune.
  • Folk games & performances – tug of war, boat races, traditional music, and even hát bội (folk opera).
  • Vegetarian food – simple but delicious dishes prepared by local families for everyone to enjoy.

The atmosphere is both spiritual and joyful, showing how culture, religion, and community life blend together on the island.

My Experience Visiting

When I arrived at Dinh Bà Ông Lang, the first thing I noticed was the peaceful environment. The temple is surrounded by nature and located not far from the calm Ong Lang Beach. The scent of incense filled the air, and local families came to pray quietly.

I took photos and videos of the temple’s architecture, its altars, and the offerings. Even outside the festival season, the temple has a calm, spiritual energy that makes you pause and reflect.
